Methodology and sources
Each calculator applies published headline rates and thresholds to the figures you enter. This page lists the rules and simplifications for every tool. Rates were last reviewed in September 2026. Always check current rates with the official authority for your country.
Two tax years, side by side. Most calculators include a “Tax year” option so you can switch between the current year and the prior year (for example FY2025-26 and FY2026-27 for Pakistan, or 2025 and 2026 for Ireland, the USA and Canada). Where a country’s rates are frozen between the two years — the UK, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and most Pakistani tools — the option is still there for consistency, but the result is the same either way, and the assumptions below say so.
How we keep rates current. All rates live in one clearly marked block of the site’s code and are reviewed at least once a year and when major budgets take effect. If a rate looks wrong, check it against the official authority linked on the relevant country page.

Employee Expense VAT Recovery
Check whether input VAT on a free employee benefit can be recovered under FTA Decision No. 17 of 2026.
- FTA Decision No. 17 of 2026 (issued 9 September 2026, effective 1 October 2026) sets six specific cases and conditions for recovering input VAT on goods or services given to employees free of charge under Article 53(1)(c)(2) of the Executive Regulation: employee transport, food and beverages, accommodation, temporary accommodation for a new joiner (first 30 days), mobile phone or internet, and parking.
- Every case needs a documented policy or contractual obligation, and no cash alternative can be offered to the employee instead of the benefit.
- Each category also has its own condition: transport must be for home-to-work, client or other job-related travel with no personal use; food and beverages must be in a remote or isolated location with no reasonable alternative; accommodation must be required by the job, for employees only, with modest fittings, and not ordinary pay; new-joiner accommodation must be proportionate to basic needs; mobile, internet and parking must be mainly for business use with incidental personal use, monitoring and records kept.
- Before 1 October 2026, a broader "documented policy, no cash alternative" test applied without these six specific categories.
- This is a simplified yes/no check, not a substitute for reading the Decision or taking advice. It covers only these six categories \u2014 other employee benefits such as training or uniforms are not addressed by this Decision.

- Qualifying Free Zone Persons pay 0% on qualifying income and 9% on other income. De minimis tests are not modelled.
- Oil, gas and other extractive businesses are usually taxed under separate Emirate-level legislation rather than the federal 9% rate; the rate shown here is an illustrative placeholder only.
- Foreign bank branches and large multinational groups within scope of the OECD Pillar Two rules are modelled at flat rates (20% and 15%) instead of the small-profits threshold and Small Business Relief.
